CONTRAPTIONS, 2003-2009
Taking cues from Dada inventions and engravings from Diderot's Encyclopedia, imaginary fetish objects are drawn in a hyper-real style. These hybrid devices consist of tongues and fingers, playfully interacting with fantasy items inspired by French eighteenth century fashion and decorative objects. Large-scale apparatuses, isolated in space, become funky machines for self-gratification and maximum autonomy.
Up!, is a riff on the Pygmalion myth. A headless Ken doll torso is cobbled with the lower body of a tumescent, adolescent boy; he sits with arms outstretched to the viewer, beckoning like a child and also as a lover. The Frankenstein boy/toy, designed for pleasure, humorously takes aim at the relationship between objects and desire.
All drawings are colored pencil on paper.
